Xi'an honored as 2018 China Bookstore Capital

Xi'an was named the "2018 China Bookstore Capital" at the 2019 China Bookstore Conference held in Beijing on Jan 8.

Five cities including Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Qingdao, Suzhou and Xi'an applied for the award. After evaluation by an expert committee, Xi'an scored the highest in terms of number of bookstores, reading rate, type of bookstore and the support of government policies.

As the birthplace of the Chinese civilization, Xi'an is the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, and the heart of the Belt and Road Initiative. It has a profound historical and cultural heritage-and physical bookstores are an important way to preserve and spread these things.

In 2017, Xi'an proposed "promoting the reading among all people and creating a city of books", strengthening the construction of libraries and supporting the development of physical bookstores.

The city currently has 1,927 physical bookstores, ranking fifth among 100 cities in the country. It is at the forefront of the country in terms of books.

In 2018, investment in the development of physical bookstores in Xi'an reached 126 million yuan (18.56 million), and more than 840 new physical bookstores were built.

The annual revenue from retail sales of publications was 747 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 28 percent, and the annual net profit from publications was 37.35 million yuan, a year-on-year of 28 percent.

In the future, Xi'an will continue to improve its public reading service system and offer support for the development of bookstores, as well as explore innovative development models.
